The Wrong Side of History
If there’s anything the last few days have taught us it’s that far too many would love it if we were still living in our grandparents’ America. It is 2017 and we were made very aware of a faction of people living in this country who would love nothing better than to cleanse the land of all those not born of the Aryan race.
Forget that they’re pounding the pavement in the name of the Nazis, a regime this very country helped topple. Forget that they proudly wave Rebel Confederate Flags, a symbol of yet another operation this country has overthrown. Forget that they either fail to realize, ignore, or are just too stupid to understand that their ancestors were also foreign to this land that they call their own. None of these things make sense to argue over because they are each clear, obvious, fact. You can’t argue facts...nor crazy.
The real issue is that there are people who are not willing to shake their conservative ideals in the name of human decency. These people, and yes that would be all you who claim you don’t see what the likes of Black Lives Matter or Colin Kaepernick are referring to when they speak out against the injustices many are confronted with here in “The Land of The Free,” are the biggest hurdle in the way of true democracy. They aim to sit idly by as freedoms are threatened and will be quick to align themselves with the winning side once the period of turmoil has passed.
Like how the Republican Party is quick to remind us that they were the ones to free the slaves and allow blacks to vote, but won't discuss the shift in their platform in the early 1900s.
For the love of country, please step forward and denounce the actions of the Alt-Right, Neo-Nazis, and any related organizations who took part or supported the aggressors in Charlottesville, Virginia. For the sake of your party, please make your voices loud and clear as you did when defending the likes of the people who murdered Trayvon Martin, Philando Castile, Sandra Bland and so many more.
Make no mistake about it, this is not a plea on my behalf. This is a warning that you will find yourselves once again on the wrong side of history. You, your family, your friends, and your political party will find yourselves etched in history as those guys. You’ll live on in history as dramatizations in movies as did the generations before you in "Remember the Titans," "Freedom Writers," or any other historical depiction of civil unrest. And unlike our grandparents’ time, the advent of social media will make it so that your name will live on in the credits.
You will be famous. You will lose. You will be remembered for it.
